Spring Vacation Inside a Book

Whether or not you have travel plans this spring, you can take surely take a trip to a wonderful work of fiction — or nonfiction (I’m not going to demand you read one over the other). There’s nothing more wonderful than a fun vacation and a wonderful book to take along for the ride. But even if you can’t enjoy a vacation, books are always an option!

Now, I thought about giving you ideas of books you could read over vacation, but I decided we needed to shake things up a bit. So, I got my maracas out and shook up something new.

Here’s the question/idea I want you to think about: If you could spend a weeklong spring vacation inside a book, which book would you choose? I’m not talking about which book you’d choose to spend your week reading. No, I’m asking you which one you would like to actually live inside for a week. Imagine yourself skadooing into the story like the blue puppy from Blue’s Clues, and think about what you would choose.

There are so many books I would love to spend a week within, but I’ve tried to narrow the list down at least a little. At first, when I thought of this idea there were a bunch of books I came up with like The False Prince books or C.J. Box’s mysteries, but I’m not totally sure I’d be alive by the end of the week, so I sifted some of those out. For a moment I even thought it might be fun to spend a week with Ruby, Liam, Chubs, and Zu from The Darkest Minds, but that sounds highly dangerous too. Like I said before, I’d like to make it out with my life at the end of the week.

Without a doubt, my first choice of destination would be The Candymakers. Can you imagine a better vacation than one spent in a candy factory like the one in this book? I can’t. The closest second I can think of would be a vacation spent in a tripped out spy RV, which is exactly what happens in The Cnadymakers and the Great Chocolate Chase. (BTW, that second Candymakers book is a fantastic book to read on a road trip. Just sayin’.)

The tough ones to sort out were the books like The Penderwicks, The Vanderbeekers, Adventures With Waffles, Anne of Green Gables, or Little Women, all of which have characters who be so much fun to get into trouble with over a week. Which of these would you choose? I couldn’t decide, so I listed all of them. Imagine getting to spend a week with Lena and Trille (Adventures With Waffles), finding trouble in the funniest ways! I’d probably never come home from vacation!

There were too many books I thought of that I would need at least a few months inside. We’ll save those for a summer vacation post.

Looking for a calm and peaceful vacation, I might choose to spend it in the town of Mitford with all its lovely residence. (Confession: I have actually only read one of the Mitford books, but I do plan to read more. That single one was enough for me to decide it was the most wonderful of places. Besides, I’ve read that one book three or four times.)

Maybe not as peaceful as a week spent in Mitford would be one spent with Grandma Dawdle. If only I could jump into A Long Way From Chicago or A Year Down Yonder and vacation with this eccentric, troublesome, and endearing grandma. Luckily, I have a grandma who has many similarities to Grandma Dawdle so I can jump across town rather than into a book if I want a mischievous outing of my own.

All this being said, if I were given the option to jump into a Darkdeep mystery, or some other fantastic and dangerous mystery for a week, there’s a good chance I would. Despite the idea of possible death while in that story I’m not sure I could pass up a week of absolute fright or mystery solving. So if you find yourself desperately wanting to be part of a thrilling book, know that you’re not alone. It’s just that this year I thought a week with the sweet Vanderbeeker family might be more conducive to my spring vacation.

So tell me; what would you choose? Out of any book you’ve read, which one would you choose to spend your vacation inside of this spring?

Big thanks to my sister for helping me out with pictures!
