Finally! I get to tell you all about my favorite book!
I mentioned The Candymakers by Wendy Mass in last week’s post, but this book is fantastic enough that it needs its own post. This is going to be our first book in the book box. All Wendy Mass books are fantastic but The Candymakers is probably my favorite.
My mom read this book to me and my siblings when we were fairly little. I loved it then and I love it even more now. Every time I read it (which is quite frequently) I find something else in it that makes the story more lovable and inspiring.
I have given this book to both my grandma’s and multiple friends over the last year or two. Basically, I’ve given it to anyone who isn’t blind and enjoys true happiness. I truly believe that everyone should have their own copy of this book.
The Candymakers is about four kids who have the chance to compete in a candy making contest where one child’s candy will be chosen as the winner and will be produced at one of the candy factories for everyone to enjoy.
These four kids not only get to compete in the contest but they get to learn from some of the greatest candy makers in the world. They get to spend three days at the Life is Sweet candy factory where they learn about making the greatest candy and have the chance to tour the factory, eating loads of candy along the way.
Part of what makes this book so much fun to read is all the mouth-watering candy you can practically taste just from reading the story, and the wonderful colorful factory. Wendy Mass does a great job making you feel like you are truly in the story and this really keeps you turning pages.
I love the characters in this story. There were some that I didn’t like very much in the beginning but as the book goes on, I got to see who each character truly is and this made me like them more.
This story starts out being told from Logan’s point of view. Logan is one of the four contestants as well as being the candy maker’s son. The whole book isn’t told from his perspective though. Each of the four contestants tells the story, which makes this really interesting to read.
Each time it changes to one of the other characters, the story starts over and is told from their point of view. I love that this book is written this way because you see how different each character’s situation is, even though they all seem to be doing the same thing.
The Candymakers has a fun mystery going on in the story. As each character tells the story you learn a little more about what’s really going on. It is truly a fun book to read because of the mystery, characters, candy and all the details that are put into the book.
It is also a great one to reread. I love rereading books and have probably read The Candymakers more than any other book. Each time I read it I pick up on small details that I didn’t the time before. There are also lots of inspirational themes in the story and I pick up on more each time I read it.
One of the many great lessons I learned from this book is that you don’t truly know what’s going on in someone’s life. You may think you know what they are going through, what their story is, and who they are, but you are usually not completely right. I think this is a great lesson to learn because when we stop assuming we know every detail of a person’s life we can be kinder and more understanding.
I hope you will read this book and then reread it again and again. I must tell you that when you read it, have a bag of candy near you at all times. It will make it even more enjoyable!
I would love to hear your thoughts on The Candymakers. If you have any book suggestions for the book box, please tell me in the comments! I would also love to hear what your favorite candy is, what candy you would create if you were in the contest, or anything else relating to candy and books. (The two best things in the world.)
